Fairtrade Producer at Queen's
On the 27th of February we were privileged to have a visit from a Fairtrade producer. Renwich Rose, a banana producer from the Windward islands, gave an informative talk on the many issues surrounding Fairtrade. Renwich discussed the unfair system in which global trade operates which has lead to the need for Fairtrade. He also talked about the benefits of Fairtrade on communities, from the increased participation in farming by woman along with the social benefits of Fairtrade and the increased level of human development and empowerment experienced by producers. Renwich expressed the importance of Fairtrade, which creates a new, equal relationship between producers and consumers. The talk ended with discussions between Renwich, Peter Gaynor (Fairtrade Mark Ireland) and the audience, focusing mainly on big business and Fairtrade.
All in all the night was incredibly inspiring, serving as a great reminder that our consumer choices can directly affect producers in developing countries. See www.in.tv/news75.php for video footage of the event.
